Counteracting siltation in the coastal waters of the North Sea is common practice in Europe. Over 130 million tons of dredged material are moved every year. Not only in Germany, but also in France, Belgium, the UK and the Netherlands, ports have to be cleared of excess sediment through regular dredging. In the Netherlands, the dredged material is used, among other things, to fill up mudflats and coastal areas in order to counteract rising sea levels.
